January
Juan Miro-Exhibition at Palazzo Blu : An exhibition takes place up until Jan 23rd in Palazzo Blu on the works of Juan Miro, one of the main exponents of surrealism. The exhibition, which will offer 110 works of the artist including paintings, drawings, litographies, sculptures and illustrations.
March
Kataklò's Love Machines : This dance extravaganza takes place on March 8th at Teatro Verdi. This dance extravaganza is a tribute to Leonardo da Vinci’s studies of body and machines and features world gymnasts adopting dance and physical theatre.
PisArt Expo: This annual exhibition takes place annually at the Stazione Leopolda. Showcasing sculptures, paintings, photographs and other visual arts, the exhibition is open each day from 8.00am until 9.00pm Monday to Friday and until 10.00pm Saturday and Sunday.
April
Lus: Experiments Under The Tower Apr-May: Held in the Vecchi Macelli area of Pisa, this annual event allows the public to participate in scientific findings which affect everyday life. Demonstrations and interactive displays are available, led by a team of young scientists exploring physical phenomenon.
May
Barchini Boat Race: Held in Castelfranco di Sotto each May, This boat race is actually held on dry land. Each boat represents a district of the town and is pushed by a group of "rowers" around three laps of the main square. There is also a 12th century catwalk and music to accompany festivities.
June
Luminara Di San Ranieri 17 Jun: The Luminara is an old Pisan tradition that was initiated in the 17th century but is now associated with the city’s patron saint, San Ranieiri. Each year thousands of candles are lit along the River Arno, each hanging on white wooden frames, transforming the landscape into an amazing spectacle of light.
San Ranieri Regatta: 17 Jun: Pitting the city’s four quarters against each other in celebration of it patron saint, the annual regatta is a must for all the family. Racing 1500 metres up the River Arno, the teams fight to grab the palio (sacred banner) from the finishing post.
Battle of the Bridge(Gioco del Ponte): This event usually takes place on the last Sunday in June. The battle takes place over the Ponte di Mezzo between Pisans from north and south of the Arno river. Dating back to the middle ages, the event is an extremely colourful an physical enactment of a medieval battle.
June-July
Music Under the Tower: Organised by the Opera della Primaziale Pisana, Music under the Tower features classical and jazz music at various venues around Pisa, in particular the Camposanto Monumentale around the Leaning Tower. This annual music event attracts the very best world renowned musicians.
October
Duck Festival (Palio del Papero): This unusual annual medieval event features quacking competitors from four different boroughs of Pisa racing against each other in the San Miniato area. Held each year since 1982, the Palio del Papero features ducks which are let loose in a track to race each other, enthusiastically cheered on by the locals of course.
November
White Truffles Festival: Held in San Miniato each year, the White Truffles Festival takes place during the last three weeks of November. An internationally recognised event, the festival is host to many cultural events apart from selling fresh truffles. Stalls line the streets with vendors displaying food and drink from all over Tuscany.
December
Pisa Marathon: One of the biggest sporting events in the Italian sporting calendar, the Pisa Marathon welcomes thousands of running enthusiasts and spectators each December to run this scenic course.For both young and old to run, walk or crawl, the Marathon takes in some of the finest scenery on offer, including the Leaning Tower.
